Off-grid power: price per watt-hour and cycle life
Two numbers decide most of this category, and neither appears on the front of the box. The first is what you pay per watt-hour of storage. The second is how many charge cycles the battery is rated for before it drops to 80 percent of its capacity.
Together they tell you the real price of the power, because a cheap unit that dies in three years is not cheap.
The short answer. Divide the price by the watt-hours before comparing anything: the EcoFlow DELTA Pro is about $0.53 per watt-hour and the Goal Zero Yeti PRO 4000 is close to $1.00, for similar chemistry. Then check the cycle rating and the warranty, which range from 3,000 cycles and four years to 4,000 cycles and ten. If you want power today with no installer, buy a portable station. If you want a house to run without the grid, you are hiring a licensed electrician and buying components, and NABCEP's public directory is the way to find one you can hold accountable. If the grid already reaches you, keeping it is free and nothing here beats free.

The small unit looks expensive per watt-hour and often is not the wrong buy, because 245 watt-hours you can carry is a different product from 4 kilowatt-hours you cannot. But the comparison between the DELTA Pro and the Yeti PRO 4000 is direct: similar chemistry, similar scale, roughly double the price per unit stored.
Several capable systems in the explorer carry no price at all, and that is deliberate. Sol-Ark, Victron's MultiPlus-II, MidNite Solar's components and EG4's inverters are normally sold through installers and distributors at a price that varies by configuration. Guessing at a number would have made the table tidier and less true.
Cycles and warranty, which is the durability that matters

Read the warranty terms as carefully as the length. EcoFlow's five years is three years standard plus a two-year extension you have to claim by registering in the app. That is a real five years for anyone who registers and a real three for anyone who does not.
The safety record is public, and it is worth checking
The Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes recalls, and this category has some.
EcoFlow DELTA Max 2000, model EFD310, was recalled on 9 October 2025: about 25,030 units, after six reports of the power station catching fire and over $850,000 in property damage. That is a different model from the DELTA Pro in the table above, and the distinction matters, but anyone shopping the brand should know it.
Goal Zero has one recall on file, from 27 February 2025, for the Solar Series Combiner Cable accessory, model 98715, about 530 units, for a fire hazard. It does not name the Yeti PRO 4000 itself.
Searches for Bluetti, Jackery, Anker SOLIX, Sol-Ark, Victron, MidNite and EG4 returned no results in 2026. Read that as recorded rather than as proven safe. A search for Generac returns active recalls on other product lines, such as electric-start pressure washers, which at least shows the database covers the brand, so the absence of a PWRcell entry means something.
Portable, or installed, and the gap between them
The explorer holds two quite different kinds of thing, and mixing them up is the most common mistake here.
A portable power station is complete. Goal Zero's Yeti, EcoFlow's DELTA and RIVER, Bluetti's AC200MAX, Jackery's Explorer and Anker's SOLIX all arrive ready: no separate charge controller, no inverter to match, no installer. You charge it from a wall outlet, a car or a panel, and you plug things into it.
A component system is not. Victron markets the MultiPlus-II as suitable for professional marine, yachting, vehicle and land-based off-grid systems, which is language written for installers. MidNite calls the Classic a charge controller with Ethernet, USB and RS232 monitoring and 20 megs of data logging, which is a part, not a product. Sol-Ark's 15K-2P delivers 15,000 W of AC output and describes grid-down generation that keeps producing through prolonged outages. EG4's 6000XP is a 48 V split-phase inverter and charger with 8 kW of PV input and 6 kW out.
These are better systems and they are not purchases in the same sense. They are the parts list for a project.
One useful correction to a common assumption: Generac's PWRcell 2 offers 9 to 18 kWh per cabinet and up to 36 kWh with two stacked, with a ten-year warranty, and it is a well-known name. Check its intended configuration against your own before assuming a familiar brand means a familiar arrangement.
The two routes that are not a product
Hire a certified installer. NABCEP is a nonprofit certification body founded in 2002. It says it gives consumers a way to hold unethical installers accountable through an enforceable code of ethics, and it lists certified professionals in a public directory. For anyone with no technical background and a whole house to power, that directory is a better starting point than any product page, including this one.
Stay on the grid. There is nothing to buy, size or install. A property already wired keeps its power by doing nothing. University of Wyoming Extension's rural comparison puts new line extension at about $20,000 a mile, which is the number that makes off-grid worth considering where the grid is far away. The same work names a utility fixed charge above about $265 a year as one signal that switching away from an existing connection might pay. Below that, the incumbent connection is very hard to beat.
A short buying audit
- Write down the watts you actually need, not the watts you might. A fridge, a router and some lights is a different machine from a well pump and a table saw.
- Divide price by watt-hours before you compare brands. The spread in this roster is nearly two to one at similar quality.
- Find the cycle rating and the warranty on the maker's own page. If the product page does not state a warranty, treat that as the answer.
- Search the CPSC database for the brand and the exact model. A recall on a sibling model is worth knowing and is not the same as a recall on yours.
- Decide whether you are buying a product or starting a project. If the page uses the word installer, it is a project.
- Price the grid connection before ruling it out. Under a sixteenth of a mile, poles usually win.
What this guide will not tell you
It will not tell you which battery chemistry is best in the abstract. Every unit scored here uses lithium iron phosphate, which is why cycle ratings cluster between 3,000 and 4,000, and comparing them on chemistry alone would separate nothing.
It also will not tell you that off-grid is greener by default. A battery is a manufactured object with a service life, and replacing one every decade has a cost that a grid connection does not. Where a load can wait for daylight, the greener and cheaper answer is often to skip storage altogether, which is a different decision with its own guide.
