Mattresses: certified materials, trial and warranty, and price

A mattress is a large, rarely bought object, usually chosen on the strength of a showroom lie-down or a website full of badges. The badges can be checked. This guide explains what the common ones cover, what the law already requires of every mattress, and how to weigh trial, warranty and price.

The short answer. If your mattress still supports you, keeping it is the cheapest and lowest-waste choice. If you buy, read certifications for what they cover: CertiPUR-US covers the foam inside, GREENGUARD Gold covers chemical emissions, and GOTS covers organic textiles. Queen prices we checked ran from $359 on sale to $2,229, and trials from a 90-day exchange to a full year. Search the brand on the CPSC recall site before you order.

What every mattress must already meet

Every mattress sold in the US must pass the Consumer Product Safety Commission's two flammability standards: 16 CFR 1632 for a smouldering cigarette and 16 CFR 1633 for an open flame. The open-flame test caps the fire's peak heat release at 200 kilowatts over 30 minutes, and the CPSC does not require any particular chemical or method to meet it (CPSC). So a claim that a mattress "meets federal flammability standards" tells you it is legal to sell. It says nothing about how.

The standard is enforced through recalls. In February 2022 Serta recalled about 800 Perfect Sleeper mattresses that failed the federal flammability standard (CPSC). In April 2022 about 700 Nectar Premier mattresses sold on Nectar's site were recalled for the same reason (CPSC). In August 2024 about 55,480 Avocado organic cotton mattress pad protectors were recalled for failing the mattress pad flammability rule (CPSC). Each recall offered a replacement. A recall is a record of a problem found and fixed, and it is worth knowing about before you buy.

What the certifications cover

CertiPUR-US covers foam. It says certified foam is made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, prohibited phthalates, and mercury, lead and other heavy metals, with volatile organic compound emissions below 0.5 parts per million (CertiPUR-US). It applies to the polyurethane foam inside a product, so a hybrid or innerspring mattress can carry it for its foam layers only. CertiPUR-US says to confirm a brand in its online directory.

GREENGUARD Gold is UL's tier for low chemical emissions: UL says it limits emissions of more than 360 volatile organic compounds and total chemical emissions (UL). GOTS is a standard for textiles made from certified organic fibres and processed under environmental and social criteria, with a public supplier search (GOTS). A brand may hold several at once: Avocado lists GOTS, GOLS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold and UL Formaldehyde-Free on its Green mattress (Avocado).

Words without a certificate deserve care. In 2013 the FTC settled with three mattress sellers, Relief-Mart, Essentia and Ecobaby, over claims that their mattresses were free of harmful volatile organic compounds without the science to back them; the orders also bar unsupported chemical-free and non-toxic claims (FTC). In 2017 the FTC settled with Moonlight Slumber over baby mattresses advertised as organic and free of volatile organic compounds (FTC).

Read the trial terms closely. Avocado offers a full year to decide, but charges a $99 return fee plus original shipping after the first 30 days, and its 25-year warranty gives full cover for ten years and prorated cover after (Avocado). IKEA's 90 days is an exchange, and Naturepedic sells the Verse as a kids and teen mattress.

The mattress you already have

Replacing a mattress on a fixed schedule is a habit, and a working mattress is a finished purchase. When you do replace one, ask about recycling. The Mattress Recycling Council runs recycling programs in California, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Oregon (MRC).

A five-minute check

  1. Look up the brand in the CertiPUR-US directory, and any other certification in its own register.
  2. Search the brand and model on SaferProducts.gov for recalls.
  3. Read the trial for return fees and whether it is a refund or an exchange.
  4. Ask how the old mattress will be taken away.

What we are not telling you

We do not rate comfort, firmness or back support, which depend on your body, and nothing here is medical advice. If pain is why you are shopping, a doctor or physiotherapist is the right first stop. A mattress with no certification on its page is not shown to be unsafe; its page simply did not state one. Prices move with sales.
